From Both Sides Of The Aegean: Expulsion And Exchange Of Populations, Tukey-greece 1922-1924 (2014)
After the success of her film SMYRNA THE DESTRUCTION OF A COSMOPOLITAN CITY, 1900-1922, award-winning Director, Maria Iliou returns to the QUAD with her second in a two-part series, FROM BOTH SIDES OF THE AEGEAN in which she documents the ethnic cleansing and violent expulsion of Greeks from the Ottoman Empire. In the first compulsory "exchange of populations" in the modern world, 1.2 million Greek Orthodox and 400,000 Muslims were forcibly relocated from Turkey to Greece and Greece to Turkey respectively. Maria Iliou and historical consultant Alexander Kitroeff once again gather a remarkable library of archival film and photographs as background to individual testimonies of Greek Orthodox and Muslim refugees across generations. Iliou brings a new perspective to the story: the film's probing interviews reveal the painful similarities of the experiences, and inspire hope that the grandchildren of the refugees from both sides of the Aegean Sea can begin to understand and reach out to each other. Blackhand Strawman (2011)
Director Terence O'Malley digs deep into personal archives, surveillance recordings, family photos, vintage magazines, newspapers, and FBI and police files to offer the definitive cinematic account of the Kansas City Mafia. Known as the Black Hand era, the years between 1900 and the early '20s were the time when Sicilian-on-Sicilian extortion was laying the groundwork for organized crime in Kansas City. Decades later, the FBI would investigate the skimming of profits from Las Vegas casinos by "The Outfit" under the code name "Strawhand." Led by the ruthless and cunning Nick Civella, The Outfit was the single most powerful crime family in Kansas City. Spanning the course of seven decades, Blackhand Strawman highlights how The Outfit evolved to become one of the most efficient organized crime families in the entire country by becoming a key heroin distribution hub in the 1930s and '40s, and exercising total control of the Teamsters Union Local 41 for three long decades beginning in the 1950s. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi
